From the early part of last century yachting and boat racing have been in vogue in Bombay. In the Bombay Times of the 6 th April, 1839, maybe found the programme of regatta in which one of the prizes was a Silver Cup of the value of E50. At the date, and even as late as 1871, vessels of English rig were rarely seen, the indigenous type of Lateen Sail prevailing. The following list of vessels, owned by Members of the Club in 1871, is given to illustrate these remarks:- |

The Lateen sail has gradually disappeared and of the yachts at present owned by Members of the Club, none are so rigged. Racing now takes place weekly from the beginning of November to the end of April, and an annual regatta, lasting for one week is held in March. |
